Confindustria Ceramica, the association representing Italy’s ceramic industry, recently held its annual assembly, providing insights into the sector’s performance and concerns for the year ahead. Despite celebrating the remarkable achievements of the previous year, which recorded a revenue growth of 16.8% amounting to €8.72 billion, President Giovanni Savorani’s report painted a rather gloomy picture of the present situation.
One glimmer of hope amid the challenges discussed was the overwhelming success of the 40th edition of Cersaie, the international exhibition of ceramic tile and bathroom furnishings. Held three months before its scheduled date, the event showcased the industry’s resilience and innovation. However, apart from this positive note, Savorani’s report, as cited by The Sole24Ore, emanated a sense of discouragement.
Forecasts for the year ahead remain predominantly negative, particularly concerning exports, which experienced a 25% decline in the first quarter. Italian companies have been disproportionately affected by the consequences of the conflict in Ukraine, facing increased costs of raw materials and energy. Savorani highlights that high inflation rates and interest rates hinder hopes of a revival in household spending on home-related goods and services.
In addition to these challenges, there are concerns regarding counterproductive decarbonization policies from Brussels, unfulfilled commitments by the Italian government on commencing drilling operations for zero-emission gas, and delays in crucial infrastructure projects such as the Campogalliano-Sassuolo link, the Cispadana highway, and the railway connection between the freight terminals of Marzaglia and Dinazzano.
All these factors contribute to a steep uphill battle for the ceramic industry in 2023. Furthermore, the sector also faces the sunset of fiscal incentives previously provided for building renovations. These tax benefits had been instrumental in stimulating demand and supporting the industry’s growth in recent years.
As Confindustria Ceramiche gears up to navigate the challenges ahead, industry stakeholders and policymakers must collaborate to address the sector’s concerns effectively. Finding solutions to mitigate the impact of geopolitical issues, ensuring stable energy costs, and delivering on infrastructure commitments are essential for sustaining the industry’s competitiveness in a global market.
In conclusion, the outlook for Confindustria Ceramiche in 2023 appears challenging, given the setbacks faced by the industry. Nonetheless, with strategic planning, innovation, and proactive collaboration, it is possible to overcome these obstacles and restore stability and growth to this vital sector of the Italian economy.
